“Neerja” Review : Best Sonam Kapoor Performance Ever

About Neerja

Teary eyes, wobbly voice and a hall full of appreciative silence, rarely do we see an ambiance like this at a movie show. Luckily for the viewers, Neerja successfully creates such an atmosphere.

The movie opens with the dialogue from Anand “Zindagi Lambi nahin, Badi honi chahiye Babumoshai” and builds upon it in the remaining time span. And to be honest, the movie handles the thought quite successfully.

Story

Neerja is a loved daughter and sister who is the life of the family. She finds herself in a plane hijack while leading a flight crew days before her 23rd birthday. The story deals with the inner conflicts of her mind and the dynamics of her family
Neerja is not a story about a Plane Hijack. It is a sketch of a brave, kind and courageous model and air hostess Neerja who fought her fears to save the lives of 359 passengers and crew members. Apart from the unnecessary or rather uncooked romantic plot of Neerja and Jaydeep’s love story, the story is crisp and doesn’t deviate an inch from the basic structure.

Performance

As mentioned, it is the best acting performance by Sonam Kapoor ever. She makes you believe that she is Neerja. You can empathize with her, smile with her, cry with her, and eventually you feel for her.
Another gem in the movie is Shabana Azmi. She once again proves why her name is associated with flawless acting. Perhaps no one could have lived Rama Bhanot like her.
The performances by other cast members are also spot on.

Music

Talking about the music, there are three songs in the movie and one in end credits. None of them feels unimportant, and each song adds to the feel of the movie. Composed by Vishal Khurana, The lyrics by Prasoon Joshi are definitely one of the valuable assets of the film. Personal favorite songs- “Jeete Hain Chal” and “Aisa Kyun Maa”

Direction

The direction of the movie is crisp. Some moments feel stretched but it all turns out favorable for the emotion. Ram Madhvani has done an amazing job as the captain of the ship.

Cinematography

Camera work is brilliant. The handheld camera use keeps the chaotic feel of the plane. You can experience the thrill and terror of the characters in the movie through the lens.

Swudscript

The end speech by Shabana Azmi can definitely make stones cry. When she says,”Neerja Mari Nahin, Wo Amar ho gayi hai” it reminds you of another famous dialogue from Anand,”Anand mara nahin, Anand marte nahin”.
